GODDESS OF THE MONTH: Isisisis2.jpg

Known for: Patron saint of women, mothers and children.

Origin: Egypt

What’s her story? Isis Panthea (“Isis the All Goddess”) was considered the greatest goddess of Egypt, and was also worshipped throughout the Greco-Roman world. Early Christians called themselves Pastophori, meaning the shepherds or servants of Isis, and images of Isis nursing Horus have been linked to the Madonna and Child. Isis was born to Geb (god of the Earth) and Nut (goddess of the Overarching Sky), but spent time among her people, teaching women how to grind corn, make bread, spin flax, weave cloth, and read. She is also famous for the use of her magical skills and medicine. She is depicted by the star Sirius, which is the star of the new year, thus was often connected with rebirth and reincarnation.

How can Isis help me during April? This Egyptian High Priestess can teach you a thing or two about how to tame men enough to live with them, and being a faithful wife and loving mother. She gently invites you to analyse your role as a mother, wife, partner or child, and offers assistance in conducting these relationships with ease and grace. Isis was known for her love and calm patience. Is that how the special people in your life view you?

Action plan:

* Isis relates to the third eye chakra, the psychic eye. Use a CD or book meditation to cleanse and open your chakras, paying particular attention to your third eye for intuition and perception. Ask Isis to assist you; place an amethyst crystal on your forehead for an extra boost!

* Isis is most often seen holding an ankh (the symbol for life). You can find ankhs in jewellery stores and charm stores. Wearing an ankh necklace will offer you Isis’ magical protection.

GODDESS OF THE MONTH: Hecatehecate2.jpg

Known for: Protection, sorcery

Origin: Asia Minor

What’s her story? Originating in the Carians of Anatolia (not Ancient Greece, as many believe), Hecate has many guises, especially in her role assisting women in childbirth. She’s also a virgin goddess (i.e. an early feminist, because she refused to sacrifice her independence for a bloke!) and is accompanied by two ghostly black she-dogs. Wiccans celebrate Hecate as the “Queen of Ghosts”: sorcery, magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy.

How can Hecate help me during March? Hecate guards the wilderness, city walls, entrances, graveyards and three-way crossroads, thus is often depicted with three heads giving her the ability to see in several directions at once (past, present, and future). Her farsightedness can help to steer you down the right path when you’re stuck at a crossroad. The Romans considered the 29th of every month her sacred day, so if you have an important choice to make, use this day to meditate and ask Hecate to show you the best direction to travel.

Action plan:

* Many herbs and plants were sacred to Hecate, including yew, cypress, hazel, black poplar, cedar, willow, garlic, almonds, dandelion, lavender, thyme, myrrh, mugwort, cardamon and mint. You can leave a bouquet or cup of tea assembled from any of these outside your house to let Hecate know that you honour and welcome her presence.

* As the night-walking crone witch goddess, Hecate appears ‘when the ebony moon shines’, so the dark phases of the moon are the most powerful times to call forth her presence or invoke her help in a spell.

* In olden times, families hung three-faced masks from their front doors to keep bad spirits away. You can buy or make a similar totem for your home to invite Hecate’s protection.

GODDESS OF THE MONTH: Pelepele2.jpg

Known for: Fiery disposition, metamorphosis, change.

Origin: Hawaii.

What’s her story? The goddess of fire, lightening, volcanoes and violence, Pele has a volatile temper, is destructive and a real force to contend with! Despite this, she can be as gentle, loving, and serene as her forests of ferns and flowering trees. She lives in the craters of the active Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, the tallest mountain on earth when measured from the bottom of the ocean. Pele was born of the female spirit Haumea, who is descended from the supreme beings Wakea (Sky Father) and Papa (Earth Mother), and is honoured on Kamehameha Day (June 11). Her message to you? Women spend too much of their lives being ‘people pleasers’. If you are feeling annoyed or riled up, it is healthy and creative to speak directly and expose your true feelings.

How can Pele help me during February? As the hottest month on the Australian calendar, you will resonate with Pele’s fiery energy easily during this time. If a situation causes you to ‘bubble over and explode’, remember that anger can be useful when channelled positively, creatively and proactively. If you’re harbouring nervous energy over something, harness it to propel yourself into vital action!

Action plan:

* Pele is a shapeshifer and often changes form, from an old or young woman to a dog, fire or lava. Ask her to help you transform into more powerful versions of yourself and ‘take on’ any characteristics you need… such as confidence (when you step into a crowded party), inner calm (when confronted by an angry customer) or courage (when something in your life needs to be done – even though it terrifies you!)

* There are countless stories and legends about Pele’s jealousy (hurling molten lava at her lovers was a favourite pass-time) however she knew when to let go of a grudge. When do you find yourself entertaining feelings of jealousy? Who do you continue to hold a grudge against? What could you benefit from letting go of these emotional blockages?

* Pele’s volatile personality can be linked to your solar plexus chakra, where nervous energy is stored. Now is the time to do a chakra clearing and pay particular attention to cleansing and lightening your yellow chakra – try a meditation CD such as Doreen Virtue’s Chakra Clearing.
